“Irina Medvedeva brought a large voice with an astonishing range to la Fée” — Opera Canada

“Irina Medvedeva was a charming, sexy and spirited Morgana, Alcina’s sister, who stopped the show more than once with her flexible, supple, yet powerful soprano.” — Robert Harris, The Globe and Mail

“Soprano Irina Medvedeva was a sex-crazed, almost over-the-top Morgana, offering a nice “Credete al mio dolore.” — Joseph So, Musical Toronto

“Irina Medvedeva…handled their roles convincingly in scenes of lust, betrayal, vengeance and tenderness. They sang with confidence, maturity, tonal beauty, superb technique and a sense of refined artistry.” — David Richards, Ontario Arts Review

“Soprano Irina Medvedeva in the role of Morgana was delicious. Her portrayal of the character was a lot more seductive and sultry than the usual flippant, flighty and fickle portrayals of her I'm used to seeing. You really felt that she feels every emotion incredibly intensely and that would dictate her actions. Her handling of the extremely high and quick coloratura was remarkable. Easy and free, This young lady is another one to watch.” —Greg Finney, Schmopera.

“The role of the Vixen is indeed a difficult one. One the one hand she has to be young, bright-eyed and coquettish… Irina Medvedeva was awfully good in the role. Her charismatic acting was utterly convincing – winsome, sharp-eared, full of the joy of life and with a little sardonic humour, but intense when needed. Second, she has that steely upper range, while still managing to sound young, and (like Erasmus) the sense of a confident command of the idiom. Third, with her Russian background, her Czech came more naturally than for many in the cast.

I have long thought (and I am not the only one) that Janáček essentially fell in love with his vixen (hence the wonderful meditation on old age at the end), and seeing Medvedeva’s performance, well can well understand why. Both these two young Canadian singers are well worth keeping an eye on, and I look forward to hearing them again.” — Mark Morris, Edmonton Classical Music
